The Monze Town Council Environmental Public Health Department has ordered the closure of the Monze Main Bus Station for discharging of sewer material in a public place and storm drainage.
Earlier, some traders and bus operators at the station demanded for its immediate closure until sanitary conditions could be guaranteed.
In a closure notice seen by Byta FM News, the bus depot is also cited for operating a public bus station under unsanitary condition and creation of smell and fly nuisance in public.
This is contrary to the Public Health Act Cap 295/Food Safety Act of 2019.
The closure notice addressed to the Bus Station Manager, dated 18th November, 2022, instructs management at the station to dislodge the septic tank immediately and consider connecting it to the SWASCO main sewer line.
It further demands that the soiled area of the station be disinfected immediately, further instructing that the station remain closed until proper sanitation is guaranteed.
According to the notice, failure to comply with the closure notice would force the Council to institute legal action against the station.
Some bus operators, who did not want to named out of fear of being victimized, expressed concern over sanitary conditions at the station which they believe could lead to the spread of diseases.
They further appealed to the local authority to provide shelter over their booths, which they are become soaked in periods of heavy rainfall. This is contained in a report published by Byta FM.
