Zambia needs to intensify and increase its value addition to copper if the country is to reap meaningful benefits from the advent of electric vehicles, says Zanaco Plc’s chief risk officer, Mutisunge Zulu.

Accoding to a post in Zambia Daily Mail, Mr Zulu said the country needs to scale up copper-wire production as global adoption of electric cars accelerates.

“Copper wire exports would bring in four times more revenue than exporting raw copper.

There is an opportunity which hasn’t been tapped. “In fact, the global shift to electric vehicles (EVs) is opening up new possibilities for Zambia. It is time to seize the opportunity,” he said in a recent interview.

“A pure electric vehicle can contain more than a mile of copper wires”.

Electric-car charging points also have heavy copper-wire requirements, with solar panels, wind turbines and smart power grids also needing copper wiring and cabling.
