The Ministry of Education has described as excessive the expulsion of five girls of Mukamambo Girls Boarding Secondary School who sneaked out to meet their lovers because children nowadays are exposed to massive social pressure.

The girls, who were in Grade Nine and 10, and aged between 14 and 16, were banished for spending nights with their boyfriends at Chalimbana University.

According to a statement in the Zambia Daily Mail, two students aged 17 and 28 have since been arrested and charged with defilement.

Some stakeholders have called for the reinstatement of the learners, while others feel their expulsion is good because it will serve as a deterrent.

Professional Teachers Union of Zambia (PROTUZ) said the expulsion of the learners was harsh. The Parliamentary Committee on Education, Science and Technology also said the decision to expel the girls is unfair, hence the need to reverse it .-
