OVER 1.5 million pieces of male condoms are earmarked for distribution in Mwansabombwe District ahead of this weekend’s Mutomboko Traditional Ceremony.

Luapula Province HIV/TB Liaison Officer Mulenga Kakungu has told ZANIS in Mansa that the condoms will be distributed as part of the HIV/AIDS service provision during the ceremony.

Mr. Kakungu says the high number of the condoms released is in anticipation of a high turnout considering that the Mutomboko Ceremony has not been held in the last three years.

He says the Provincial Health Office is collaborating with the Provincial AIDS Coordination Advisor (PACA) in the HIV prevention measures.

Mr. Kakungu explains that the big number of condoms to be given does not in any way suggest promotion of promiscuity but help stop the spread of HIV/AIDS during event.

He says the condoms will be provided for free to the local people and cultural tourists who will flock Mwansabombwe during and after the event.

Mr. Kakungu has however bemoaned the low consumption rate of female condoms saying only 1000 pieces are expected to be given out.

And Mr. Kakungu has disclosed that the Provincial Health Office will also offer mobile health services in Mwansabombwe during which over 2000 people are expected to be vaccinated against Covid-19.
