Statement: Our condolences to the royal family and people of the United Kingdom for the loss of a global leader. Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II represents many things to many people. For close to a century, she has been involved in the development of our global civilization in all its facets.

The establishment of the Commonwealth under her watch and leadership has helped foster unity and development for member countries, particularly African countries. Zambians have fond memories of her personal attachment to this landlocked jewel in the southern African region. Her attachment to this jewel called Zambia, is exemplified by the friendship she fostered and enjoyed from the first Republican President Dr. David Kenneth Kaunda to those that followed later, and generally to the people of Zambia.

We remember her conveying her massage of condolence and mourning with us on the loss of Dr. Kaunda. This reminded us of her leadership style which was above politics but more so about preserving peace, relationships and the well-being of the people.

This is a huge loss to the people of the United Kingdom, the people of Zambia and the global community. Our world has dimmed with your passing. At this hour of sorrow, we pray for the family and the world to always remember her as an example of grace, civility, grit and duty that we must all aspire to achieve as leaders.

Once again, I would love to convey my deepest condolences to the royal family and the United Kingdom, may God comfort you and be with you.

May her soul rest in eternal peace.

Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu

Sixth President of the Republic of Zambia
