20 United Church of Zambia (UCZ) women have died in accident in Nsumbu district of Northern Province.
The United Church of Zambia Synod has since expressed its deep sorrow at the loss of 20 members of the Women’s Christian Fellowship (WCF) of Nsama Consistory, in the Northern Presbytery.
According to a statement issued by UCZ general secretary Reverend Chipasha Musaba, 18 women died on the spot while two others died at Nsumbu clinic after a Canter truck they were in overturned around 01:00 am on the Nsama-Nsumbu road.
The accident happened at Chaushi Hill in Nsumbu district.
“The United Church of Zambia Northern Presbytery Bishop, Rev. Maybin Mulenga has confirmed the sad development. Bishop Mulenga said the accident happened after the driver of the Motor Vehicle light canter truck which the mothers boarded lost control and overturned as it was descending the Chaushi Hill, few kilometers from Nsumbu,” Rev Musaba said.
The deceased church members were part of the 58 women who were travelling back from the Consistory Conference which was held at Munwa in Nsama Consistory over the weekend.
The accident survivors were rushed to Nsumbu clinic and Mpulungu District hospital for medical attention.
The bodies of the deceased have since been deposited in Mporokoso General Hospital Mortuary.
