The National Action for Quality Education in Zambia (NAQEZ) has demanded that as President Hakainde Hichilema addressed the nation tomorrow, salary increment for teachers should be one of the topics he should touch on.

In a statement today, NAQEZ Executive Director Aaron Chansa said the Head of State has on different occasions, including this year’s Labour Day, directed both the Ministry of Education and the Teaching Service Commission to rectify teachers’ salary scales as far as upgrades are concerned.

Dr Chansa added that teachers across the country now demand clear confirmation.

“Will the long-awaited salary scale upgrades be fulfilled this year? The silence is growing louder with only three months left in the year,” he said.

He also said the recruitment of 4,500 new teachers, as factored in the 2024 national budget, remains stagnant with no progress to talk about.

“NAQEZ urges the President to address this delay and reassure the public that education remains a priority for his administration, the New Dawn Administration,” he stated.

Dr Chnda however commended the government for the progress made in implementing the school feeding programme in drought-stricken areas.

“This initiative is necessary for ensuring that children continue to learn despite the crisis. We expect our President to reaffirm and emphasise his unwavering commitment to expanding this life-saving, progressive initiative,” he stated.
