A livestock farmer from Macha chiefdom in Choma’s Mbabala Constituency has called on civic leaders to put money to work by investing in rainwater harvesting techniques in the area.

Trywell Munamuzunga noted that during the dry season, herders walk a distance of 50 kilometers upwards in search of water at Munyeke River due to the lack of reservoirs for the commodity in the chiefdom.

He told Byta FM News that harvesting rainwater would allow for year-round farming through irrigation, stating that this has been the message and call by various stakeholders, with the need highlighted during the drought experienced in the previous rain season.

Meanwhile, Mbabala Constituency Member of Parliament Joseph Munsanje said plans are already in place to construct more dams in the area.

He noted that the initiative would be complemented with a management exercise for existing water reservoirs across the constituency.
