A 61-year-old man from DSV Extension in Livingstone was attacked and killed by a hippo yesterday around 08:00 hours.

According to a statement issued by Southern Province Police Commanding Officer Auxensio Daka, the deceased, Geoffrey Bwalya, had left his house to exercise and stretch his legs along the sewer ponds in Dambwa Site Extension, as he had been sick for a long time.

While walking, he was spotted and attacked by a hippo believed to be raising its calf in one of the sewer ponds. The deceased sustained serious injuries, including a deep wound on the belly that exposed his internal organs, a broken left leg, and cuts on the head.

The body has been deposited at the Batoka Hospital Mortuary, awaiting a postmortem.
