A 33-year-old woman from Kalyati Village in Chief Nondo’s Chiefdom in Senga Hills District, has been arrested for allegedly killing her one-month-old baby.

Northern Province Police Commissioner Lucky Munkondya confirmed the incident to Isunga News and identified the suspect as Ruth Kalembwe.

According to Ms. Munkondya, the suspect was drinking bèèr with others in the village when she reportedly expressed intentions to harm her child. However, her comments went unnoticed as the group was intóxicáted and later dispersed around 21:00hrs.

The Police Commissioner revealed that at approximately 4 AM, Christina Namwinga, the child’s grandmother, heard the baby crying and questioned Ruth about the lack of attention to the infant. Ruth then informed her that the baby had died.

Ms. Munkondya added that the village headman was notified, leading to a police investigation.

She said Upon arrival, authorities conducted a physical examination of the deceased and discovered blòòd clots in the baby’s nostrils.

The body has since been deposited to Senga District Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination while the suspect has been detained on charges of infanticide and is expected to appear in court soon.
