The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has launched an enforcement operation to remove illegal roadside vendors following the expiration of a seven-day relocation notice.
Business owners selling quarry, sand, and blocks along roadsides have been ordered to move to designated trading sites immediately. The Council warns that failure to comply will result in the removal of goods and equipment.
In a statement, LCC Public Relations Manager Chola Mwamba emphasized that roadside vending poses serious safety risks to motorists and pedestrians. “Selling along roads is not only illegal but also compromises road safety. The Council has issued several warnings, but some business owners have chosen to ignore them,” she said.
The LCC has assured the public that designated trading areas are available, in line with directives from the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development. The Council has also successfully prosecuted individuals involved in street trading and other related offenses in the past.
As the enforcement operation continues, vendors are being urged to comply with the law to avoid disruptions.
