A 25-year-old man is feared dead after he allegedly threw himself into the crocodile infested Luangwa River in Mambwe district, Eastern province.
This was after he was advised against excessive beer drinking, by his family who told him to instead spend his money on other things.
PETER BANDA, of Fwalu village in Chief KAKUMBI’s area, jumped into the river around 08:00 hours yesterday.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer, ROBERTSON MWEEMBA has confirmed, adding that the deceased also had a history of mental disorder, whenever he got drunk.
Mr. MWEEMBA said on the material day after being advised, Mr. BANDA left home without telling anyone, and one of the villagers informed the family that he saw him heading towards the river.
He explained that family members followed the footprints, that led them to the river and later found slippers of Mr. BANDA at the lagoon, and they reported the matter to the police.
Mr. MWEEMBA said the police and wildlife officers have since intensified the search for Mr. BANDA in the crocodile infested Luangwa River.
