Police in Kasama recorded a fatal hit-and-run road traffic accident yesterday Tuesday, 9th December 2025, around 17:00 hours near Malama SDA Church along the Kasama–Mpika Road.

Northern Province Commanding Officer LUCKY MUKONDYA has confirmed the sad development noting that two juvenile pedestrians of Malama Compound aged 6 and 11 years were hit by a Toyota Hiace minibus, registration number AIE 4411ZM.

Ms. MUNKONDYA says one sustained fatal head injuries and died on the spot, while the other sustained suspected internal injuries and is unconscious.

She says the body of the deceased child is lying in Kasama General Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem examination, and the injured child is admitted to the same health facility.

Ms. MUKONDYA explains that the accident initially involved an unknown motor vehicle whose driver sped off immediately after hitting the pedestrians, who were walking off the road, adding that preliminary investigations indicate the accident occurred due to excessive speed, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

She has further disclosed that police later identified the driver as Bernard Mulenga, aged 42, of Mumba Village in Chief Mwamba’s area of Kasama District. Adding that both the driver and the motor vehicle are currently in police custody as investigations into the matter continue.
