Livingstone is set to become the first city in the country to introduce dedicated cycle lanes as government advances major road infrastructure upgrades under the Livingstone Town Centre Development Programme (LTCDP).
Tourism Minister Rodney Sikumba, who is also Livingstone Member of Parliament, said this during the groundbreaking ceremony for the rehabilitation and upgrading to bituminous standard of approximately 8.31 km of selected city centre roads under the programme.
He said Livingstone is being transformed through a structured approach aimed at improving urban mobility, enhancing tourism infrastructure, and strengthening economic activity in the city.
The Minister further said Livingstone will, for the first time, have dedicated cycle lanes, making it the only city in the country to introduce such infrastructure.
Project Coordinator for the Great TDP, Chilala Mayanda Habasimbi, said the works form part of the broader Green, Resilient and Transformational Tourism Development Project (GREAT-TDP), which runs from 2024 to 2030.
She said the Livingstone Town Centre Development Programme includes road rehabilitation, installation of solar streetlights, cycle lane planning, and regeneration of public spaces aimed at improving the city’s tourism competitiveness.
