Five small-scale miners are trapped at Matala Gold Mine in Nangoma Constituency, Mumbwa District.
The miners have been trapped since around 04:00 hours on Sunday.
Matala Gold Mine, which was previously operated by a cooperative, has been closed for the past two years.
ZNBC’s HONESTER MSHOKA reports that officers from the Zambia Police Service, the Mine Safety Department, the Fire Brigade and health personnel are at the site.
Nangoma Member of Parliament COLLINS NZOVU is also at the scene.
Officials from Trade Kings and EX Point Mines are also on site supporting the rescue operation.
And Mr. NZOVU said Government sympathises with the families of the victims and will ensure efforts are made to rescue the trapped miners.
Meanwhile, Mumbwa District Commissioner NAMUKULO HAYUMBU said she remains hopeful that all five miners will be rescued safely.
