Minister of Tourism Rodney Sikumba has officially commissioned new infrastructure and equipment at Lavushi Manda National Park in Muchinga Province. This development is part of the Transforming Landscapes for Resilience and Development (TRALARD) Project and is intended to improve tourism and conservation efforts in the region.
In a speech delivered by Provincial Deputy Permanent Secretary Brian Sichande, it was noted that the upgrades are a key step in making Zambia’s protected areas ready for investment. The ZMW 29 million project includes nineteen new staff houses, a park entry gate, a control room, and water systems, along with the renovation of seven existing homes. New communication and plant equipment were also provided to help with wildlife protection and park law enforcement.
Ministry officials highlighted that these improvements are designed to boost the local economy and support community livelihoods. The TRALARD Project has dedicated roughly USD 3.5 million to Lavushi Manda and the nearby Mpumba Community Conservancy. These efforts align with the country’s long-term tourism plans to develop the Northern Tourism Circuit, which includes nearby attractions like the Bangweulu Wetlands and Kasanka National Park.
Acting Director for the Department of National Parks and Wildlife, Jones Masonde, added that the new facilities will greatly improve the welfare of staff and the experience for visitors. The Ministry of Tourism remains focused on building partnerships to manage national parks effectively and increase tourism revenue across the country.
