Five miners who were rescued alive after being trapped underground for 17 days at Matala Gold Mine in Nangoma Constituency have been discharged from Mumbwa District Hospital.

The miners who were rescued on May 19th 2026 after being underground from May 3rd 2026 have been receiving medical attention at Mumbwa District Hospital.

Mines and Minerals Development Permanent Secretary Hapenga Kabeta, who visited the miners at the hospital today said illegal mining not only puts lives of people at risk but also undermines efforts to promote a safe and sustainable mining sector in the country

Dr. Kabeta has since warned people against engaging in illegal mining activities, describing the practice as dangerous and life-threatening.

The PS has called on communities in mining areas to embrace safe and legal mining practices by forming cooperatives and obtaining mining licences from relevant authorities.

Dr. Kabeta further encouraged local people to consider alternative economic activities such as farming instead of risking their lives through illegal mining activities.

He assured communities that the government remains committed to supporting citizens willing to venture into legal and organised mining activities that comply with safety regulations.

And one of the survivors, 26-year-old Morgan Malichi said the five miners were engaged in piece work in an effort to earn a living and provide for their families when they became trapped underground

Mr. Malichi has thanked God for sparing his life following the 17-day ordeal underground.
