A 56-year-old boilermaker has died after falling into a flask while attempting to clear a jammed transfer car at Konkola Copper Mines’ underground operations.

Copperbelt Police Commissioner MWALA YUYI says the incident occurred on May 26, 2026 at about 05:00 hours at the 1,430-metre level of the mine.

Mr. YUYI has identified the victim as TIMOTHY MWANANSHIKU, who had reported for duty on the evening of May 25, when the accident occurred.

He says an emergency response team was immediately activated and successfully retrieved Mr. MWANANSHIKU from the shaft.

The victim was initially taken to Konkola Mine Hospital before being referred to Kitwe Teaching Hospital for specialised treatment.

Mr. YUYI says Mr. MWANANSHIKU later succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, May 28,2026, at about 21:40 hours.

He says the body is currently lying in the Kitwe Teaching Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
