A five-year-old boy has died and five other passengers have been hospitalized following a road traffic accident along the Great East Road in Nyimba District.
Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba stated that the incident occurred around 07:45 hours at the Mwengelele area, about 28 kilometers west of Nyimba Town.
A Toyota Noah bearing registration number BLE 4727ZM, driven by 36-year-old Philimon Chirwa of Six Miles, Lusaka, was traveling from east to west with six passengers on board when a rear-left tyre burst.The blowout caused the driver to lose control, leading the vehicle to veer to the right side of the road and overturn.
A five-year-old passenger, Given Chirwa, sustained fatal head injuries and died on the spot, with his body subsequently deposited at the Nyimba District Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem.
Five other passengers sustained various injuries and were admitted to Nyimba District Hospital.
Margaret Chirwa (28) Sustained facial bruises, a painful left shoulder, and a cut on the forehead. James Chirwa (9), Sustained facial bruises, bleeding from the mouth, and a cut on the forehead. Majory Zulu (19) Sustained bruises to the left leg, a suspected fractured right collarbone, and painful hips. Grace Phiri (14), Complained of chest pains, neck pain, and pain in the left hand. Joyce Mwanza (30), Complained of chest pains.
The driver escaped unhurt and has been detained at Nyimba Police Station while police investigate the extensively damaged vehicle.
