The Kitwe City Council’s Department of Public Health has seized 529 assorted items valued at K49,259 from 11 business premises across the Kitwe Central Business District and Chisokone Market.
The routine inspections targeted wholesalers, restaurants, butcheries, and bus stations to ensure adherence to food safety regulations. Authorities uncovered items that were damaged, contaminated, or past their expiration dates, posing potential risks to consumers.
Among the confiscated goods were 19 boxes of Nshima soft biscuits, 3 cases of Delite Mayonnaise, and 7 packs of apples. The local authority stated that the seized merchandise violated the Food Safety Act No. 7 of 2019.
Kitwe City Council Public Relations Officer Kafula Mutale Sinyangwe emphasized that the council remains committed to safeguarding public health through regular checks.
Business owners have been urged to strictly comply with food safety laws and maintain valid documentation, while consumers are encouraged to inspect packaging and check expiration dates before purchasing goods.
