A WOMAN aged 43 of Lubuto Township in Ndola has been ordered to pay K1,000 for allegedly insulting a business woman who sold her rice worth K100 on credit.

Kabushi Local Court ordered Annie Nalwinga to compensate Vera Chuma, 50, a resident of the same area, for allegedly insulting her when she asked for her money for rice.

Nalwinga was sued by Chuma for compensation for defamation of character and insults.
Chuma told the court that earlier this year Nalwinga got rice worth K100 from her on credit and agreed to pay at the end of the month.

“Two months passed without any word from her and so I decided to visit her place to find out why she had delayed paying for the rice. At first, she told me politely that she had problems and that was the reason why she failed to give me the money and I understood. She promised me that she would settle me soon,” she said. She said she went for a second time but Nalwinga became rude and started insulting her and later chased her from the house.

“When I went to the police to report the case, they gave me a call-out. When she received it, she followed me all the way to my house and stood at the gate and started insulting me in front of my neighbours,” she said.

But Nalwinga denied the allegations and told the court that Chuma was the one who insulted her for not paying for the rice.

“I told her that I was facing challenges paying the money but she continued coming to my house. One day she called me a crook and insulted me in front of my husband,” Nalwinga said. She said she had not refused to give her the money but said she would do so later.

However, presiding Senior Magistrate John Kabwe, sitting with senior magistrate Emeldah Masuwa, ordered Nalwinga to pay K1,000 as compensation.
