A 36-year-old man from Petauke District has drowned while fishing in Chandema Dam.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident to ZANIS in Chipata.
Mr Mweemba stated that the matter was reported by the deceased’s elder brother, Solomon Lungu, aged 61, of Chandema Village, on April 24th at 08:00 hours.
According to police, the deceased, identified as Edward Lungu, went fishing on April 24, 2025, in the company of his friend, Island Lungu, aged 38, also of Chandema Village.
Mr Mweemba explained that upon arriving at the dam, Edward dived into the water to cast a fishing net but unfortunately reached a deep and muddy section, causing him to drown.
Mr Mweemba explained that his friend immediately rushed back to the village to alert others and villagers responded quickly and managed to retrieve the body from the dam.
Police officers later visited the scene and conducted an inspection of the body, which showed no signs of physical injury.
The body of the deceased has since been taken to Petauke General Hospital Mortuary, where it is being held awaiting burial.
