A 34-year-old truck driver is currently battling for his life at Nyimba District Hospital following a road accident that happened yesterday.

The accident occurred when the truck and tanker trailer veered off the road and plummeted into a ditch at Renamo area along Great East Road, approximately 53km west of Nyimba town.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba said the driver, identified as Emmanuel Mulopwe of Lubumbashi, DRC, was driving a Scania Truck and Tanker Trailer.

He said the vehicle was traveling from east to west, loaded with 46,000 liters of petrol fuel, when the accident happened.

Mr. Mweemba said the driver failed to negotiate a curve to the left due to excessive speed, resulting in the vehicle careering off to the right side of the road and falling into a ditch.

He stated that the driver sustained suspected fractures to the thigh of his right leg, a cut below the chin, and a cut on the palm of his right hand, and is currently admitted to Nyimba District Hospital.

The motor vehicle caught fire and was completely burnt to ashes.
