*PRESS STATEMENT ON THE BLOCKING OF INDEPENDENCE EVE PRAYERS BY THE ZAMBIA POLICE SERVICE**For immediate release**LUSAKA, Friday, October 24, 2025*-Citizens First (CF) has noted with concern the statement issued by State House Chief Communications Specialist Clayson Hamasaka, claiming that President Hakainde Hichilema did not direct the Zambia Police Service to stop hundreds of worshippers, led by Apostle Sunday Sinyangwe, from holding overnight prayers at the OYDC.
This statement is nothing but an afterthought and a desperate attempt to manage the public backlash that followed the shameful conduct of the police.
As Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Hichilema was undoubtedly aware of the police action. It is inconceivable that the Zambia Police Service could move to stop such a significant public event, particularly one rooted in Christian faith without instructions or clearance from higher authorities. This act, therefore, reflects a worrying state of governance, where fundamental freedoms and the rights of our people are being trampled upon by the United Party for National Development (UPND) administration.
The decision to block the prayers, especially on the eve of Independence Day, goes against the very spirit of freedom and independence that our forefathers fought for. It dishonors the sacrifices of those who secured our liberty and the declaration of Zambia as a Christian nation.
It must be noted that Apostle Sinyangwe’s “Standing in the Gap” overnight prayers have become an annual tradition on Independence Eve, Christmas Eve, and New Year’s Eve. These gatherings bring Christians together to pray for the wellbeing of our nation, and for deliverance from challenges such as corruption, high cost of living, tribalism, nepotism, and unemployment.
By stopping these prayers, the police denied citizens a moment of solace , reflection and spiritual cushion amidst the hardships created by this government’s mismanagement of national affairs. Ironically, the very prayers they blocked could have contributed to easing the escalating political tension in the country.
President Hichilema’s call for investigations into this matter is inadequate. What is expected from a true leader is decisive action. The President should have suspended the officers involved pending the outcome of investigations.
We therefore demand that State House update the nation on the progress and conclusions of these investigations, as well as on the disciplinary action taken against the erring officers.
If indeed President Hichilema is a devout Christian who upholds his faith with sincerity, he must demonstrate it by allowing citizens to freely gather and worship without intimidation, fear, or interference from state machinery.
