Former Republican Vice President Dr Nevers Mumba has called for the mortal remains of late former President Edgar Lungu to be brought back to Zambia for burial, warning that growing political mistrust is harming national unity.

‎‎In a statement issued today, Dr Mumba said Zambia is currently facing a serious crisis of trust, which he believes is at the centre of several national stand-offs, including the prolonged delay in the burial of the former Head of State.

‎‎Dr Mumba described the delay as one of the most painful and shameful outcomes of deep political suspicion among key players, attributing the situation to political differences, tribal sentiments, historical grievances and political propaganda.‎‎

He said the spread of fear and half-truths has worsened divisions in the country, noting that some individuals have taken advantage of people’s struggles and insecurities instead of promoting national unity.‎‎

Dr Mumba further observed that public discourse, particularly on social media, has deteriorated, with insults and hostility replacing meaningful debate.

‎‎According to him, the toxic environment has made it difficult for the nation to come together even during moments that traditionally call for unity, such as the burial of a former President.

‎‎He emphasized that the delay in laying Mr Lungu to rest is not an isolated issue but part of a broader national problem rooted in mistrust and lack of cooperation among political actors.‎‎

With the year coming to an end, Dr Mumba urged leaders to rise above politics and make the first move towards resolving the impasse, calling for empathy and dignity in handling the burial of the former President.‎‎

He appealed for the remains of President Lungu to be returned to Zambia and buried in the land of his forefathers, stressing that the former Head of State should be allowed to rest in peace.
