Former Chipolopolo captain Christopher Katongo has described the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as more than just a football competition, calling it a powerful symbol of unity across the continent.
The 2012 AFCON winner says the tournament is especially important for African players who often rise from humble beginnings, giving them a platform to showcase their talent on the biggest stage. He noted that AFCON brings together different languages, cultures and tribes, helping to strengthen bonds among African nations.
Katongo also praised improvements in technology, saying they have contributed to fair play in the game, while modern players now benefit from easy access to online football knowledge. However, he observed that the game has become more theoretical compared to the past.
On Chipolopolo’s prospects, Katongo believes Zambia remains in the mix, stressing that while some teams may be favourites, every nation has a chance to progress.
