The United Party for National Development (UPND) wishes to strongly caution all its members and cadres against attacking, harassing, or intimidating journalists and media institutions.
The Party reiterates the clear and consistent position of His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema that no one is above the law. Any individual who engages in criminal conduct does so at their own risk and will be held personally accountable in accordance with the laws of the Republic.
UPND places it on record that the media must be protected at all times. Journalists and media institutions should not be subjected to any form of harassment or violence. The media plays a critical role in strengthening democracy and must be allowed the space to operate freely, independently, and professionally without fear or intimidation. Under the leadership of President Hichilema, there is no room for media suppression.
The Party further calls upon the Zambia Police Service to thoroughly investigate all reported incidents involving attacks on journalists and ensure that all those involved are arrested and prosecuted without fear or favour. Journalists, like all citizens, are entitled to their fundamental rights and freedoms as enshrined in the Constitution.
The UPND also issues a stern warning to all aspiring candidates within the Party. Any individual found moving with cadres who are engaging in acts that contradict the values and principles of the UPND risks facing serious disciplinary action, including suspension or expulsion from the Party. Such conduct amounts to sabotage and brings the Party into disrepute, especially as the country approaches the general elections.
The Party has built a strong record based on peace, rule of law, and respect for democratic institutions. This record must be protected. Any aspiring candidate associated with violent or unruly cadres will be dealt with decisively using available legal frameworks, including the Party’s disciplinary code.
UPND stands firmly for peace and does not condone violence in any form. All members are urged to uphold the values of the Party and adhere to the guidance provided by the President.
