The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has released a public notice confirming the formal withdrawal of a presidential candidate ahead of the polls.
According to the notice issued by Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro on today on the 12th of August, 2026, Xavier Franklin Chungu, representing the Liberal Democratic Party, has officially withdrawn and resigned from the presidential race.
The commission noted that pursuant to Article 52(6)(a) of the Constitution of Zambia (Amendment) Act No. 13 of 2025, a candidate who withdraws is not eligible to contest the forthcoming General Election scheduled for August 13, 2026.
The public and all stakeholders have been further advised that any votes cast in favor of the withdrawn candidate will not constitute valid votes.
