Despite ongoing concerns regarding xenophobic attacks in South Africa, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship has reported that over 600 Malawian citizens are still traveling to the country on a daily basis.
Pasqually Zulu, the spokesperson for the Department of Immigration, addressed the situation today. While acknowledging the fundamental right to travel, Zulu emphasized that the current environment in South Africa is unsafe. He noted that the government is expending significant financial resources to repatriate Malawians who have been affected by xenophobic violence and urged citizens to refrain from traveling to the country at this time.
Michael Kaiyatsa, the Executive Director of the Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation, described the trend as deeply concerning.
He indicated that the persistence of this travel, despite the clear risks, serves as a stark indicator of the desperation Malawians face in their search for economic opportunities. Like immigration officials, Kaiyatsa also called on citizens to suspend all travel to South Africa until the situation improves.
