MINISTRY of Technology and Science Permanent Secretary Brilliant Habeenzu says artificial intelligence (AI) will not take away Zambian workers’ jobs because Government is embracing the technology to enhance efficiency, productivity and innovation.
Dr Habeenzu says AI should be viewed as a tool that makes work easier rather than a threat to employment.
“Workers would instead require new skills to work alongside emerging technologies,” he said.
He was responding to concerns raised by Zambia Federation of Employers chief executive officer Harrington Chibanda, who noted that there is growing fear that AI could replace many workers.
Dr Habeenzu said AI can be compared to the introduction of calculators, saying technological advancements have always simplified work.
He said Government has launched the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy for 2024-2026 but is strengthening the country’s legal framework before rolling out AI on a wider scale.
Government also revised cyber legislation by separating cyber security and cybercrimes laws to promote responsible use of AI and avert abuse of the technology.
Dr Habeenzu said Government is also reviewing data protection legislation to expand its scope beyond personal information to include economic data, which he described as critical for effective AI systems.
He said AI depends on quality data, warning that poorly organised information will limit the country’s ability to benefit from the technology.
Dr. Habeenzu assured workers and employers that there is no reason to panic, stating that technology has historically created opportunities while changing the nature of work.
