A 19-Year-Old Boy of Chama District has allegedly taken his own life after his father reportedly told him that he had no transport money for him to travel to Lusaka.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed the incident, saying it occurred on Monday, July 6, 2026, at around 10:00 hours in Chief Tembwe’s Chiefdom.
Mr. Mweemba identified the deceased as Widson Goma, 19, of Ng’anjo Bazimu Village.
Mr. Mweemba explained that earlier that morning, at around 06:00 hours, Widson reportedly asked his father, Levison Goma, 46, for transport money to travel to Lusaka to visit his sister, Elivah Goma.
However, his father reportedly told him that he had no money to give him, a response which allegedly upset the teenager.
Police say Widson then bought maize preservative tablets and began consuming them.
Mr. Mweemba says his father reportedly found him taking the last tablet and attempted to stop him, but the deceased allegedly ran away while continuing to swallow the tablets.
He says villagers later managed to catch up with him, but it was too late as he had already consumed the tablets. He later died at home.
Mr. Mweemba said police have since opened an inquiry into the matter, and investigations are ongoing.
