A 23-year-old woman in Chief Mpezeni’s Chiefdom of Chipata District has allegedly been gang-raped by five men in an incident that occurred on Sunday night.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba said the case was reported on Monday, July 6, 2026.
Mr. Mweemba said the woman reported that she was allegedly raped by five men identified as Charles, Joe, Edward, and two others whose names are not yet known, but whom she said she can identify if seen.
The suspects are all believed to be from Luangeni Village in Chief Mpezeni’s Chiefdom.
He said the victim sustained injuries, including pain in her private parts, waist, neck, hands, and other parts of her body.
Mr. Mweemba said on July 5, 2026, around 20:00 hours, the woman was with a man identified as Cosmas buying chips when one of the suspects, Charles, allegedly followed them, grabbed her by the hand, and started beating her with a stick without provocation.
He said another man identified only as Dara intervened and rescued the woman.
Mr. Mweemba said the woman later returned home at around 20:30 hours and went to sleep alone in her house.
However, while she was asleep, she allegedly heard voices outside before five men allegedly forced their way into her house.
He said the suspects allegedly restrained her by holding her hands and legs, covered her mouth to prevent her from screaming, undressed her, and allegedly raped her one after another.
Mr. Mweemba said the woman attempted to scream for help, but no one came to her rescue as residents were asleep. After the alleged assault, the suspects allegedly fled the scene with her clothes.
He said no arrests had been made by press time, and investigations have been instituted to bring the suspects to justice.
A docket has been opened.
