A seven-year-old boy is on the road to recovery after doctors at Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital (LMUTH) successfully performed emergency surgery to treat a serious genital injury he sustained while attempting to circumcise himself.

The child was rushed to the hospital, where the Urology team acted swiftly to assess his condition before taking him into emergency surgery. Hospital officials say he responded well to treatment and is now in a stable condition.

According to LMUTH, the boy’s mother told medical staff that her son had, on several occasions, expressed a desire to be circumcised. However, the procedure had not yet been arranged before the incident occurred.

The hospital said the case highlights the need for parents and guardians to engage children in open, age-appropriate conversations about their health and respond to concerns that may seem minor but could have serious consequences if left unaddressed.

Medical experts explained that as children grow older and spend more time with their peers, they naturally become curious about their bodies and may notice physical differences. Without proper guidance, that curiosity can sometimes lead to unsafe decisions.

LMUTH has encouraged parents to seek advice from qualified healthcare professionals whenever children ask about circumcision or other health-related issues, instead of postponing the conversation or the procedure where appropriate.

The hospital also reminded the public that male circumcision is a safe and commonly performed medical procedure when carried out by trained healthcare professionals in a recognised health facility.

It further warned against relying on information from peers or unverified online sources, saying misinformation can expose children to unnecessary risks.

Hospital management emphasised that early consultation and timely access to professional healthcare remain the best way to prevent avoidable injuries and protect children’s health.

Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital reaffirmed commitment to providing specialized health care while continuing to sensitize the public on child safety and preventive health practices.

The emergency operation was performed by Dr. B. Chungu, Dr. C.K. Lupinda and Dr. Mbewe, with Sr. Mr North was the anaesthetic support and Bernadette was the scrub nurse.

The hospital has sent the young patient best wishes for a full recovery and has commended the medical team for its swift intervention and coordinated care.
