A 27-year-old man has died in Sinda District weeks after he was allegedly assaulted with a pan and brick during a drinking session at a tavern in Mwase Village.
The deceased, identified as Andrew Njobvu of Chabamba Village in Chief Kawaza, is alleged to have been assaulted by his 23-year-old cousin, Martin Banda, on July 22, 2026.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba said the incident happened around 19:00 hours while Njobvu and several other people were drinking Chibuku beer at a tavern.
Mr Mweemba said Banda allegedly picked up a quarrel with his father, 58-year-old Abia Banda, and started fighting.
Njobvu and another cousin, Edward Maseko, reportedly intervened in an attempt to separate the two. During the confrontation, Banda allegedly picked up a pan brick and struck Njobvu on the left cheek, causing him to fall and lose consciousness.
Njobvu was later taken to his uncle’s home before the matter was reported to police. A police medical report form was issued, and he received treatment at Sinda Zonal Health Facility.
He subsequently returned home but remained unwell for about two weeks before being taken to Sheketeni Mini Hospital after developing persistent headaches.
On August 9, Njobvu was referred to St Francis Mission Hospital, where he was admitted.
He died at the hospital on August 10, 2026, around 14:00 hours. The death was reported to Sinda Police the following day, August 11, prompting police to open a docket for murder.
Mr Mweemba said Banda has since been apprehended and is currently in police custody.
The body of Njobvu has been deposited at St Francis Mission Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
