RUNNER Muzala Samukonga yesterday broke his Birmingham Commonwealth Games gold medal-winning personal best time as he beat some of the renowned runners to finish top in 400 metres at Botswana Golden Grand Prix.
And Zambian runners yesterday recorded mixed results on the first day of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Championship, with Thompson Mbewe being the most outstanding after he won heat five in the under -20 400 metres category.
Samukonga’s time yesterday became the best in the world in 400 metres this year with the previous being 44:17 seconds set by South Africa’s Wayde Van Niekerk.
Niekerk is also the current world record holder in 400 metres with 43:03 seconds.
Samukonga won gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in England with a time of 44:66 seconds but he smashed it with a breathtaking 43:91 seconds to finish ahead of former world and Olympic champion James Kirani, of Granada.
