The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has expressed deep sorrow following the death of former Copper Queens head coach Bruce Mwape, who died on Thursday morning at the age of 67.

According to a statement issued by FAZ Head of Media and Communications NKWETO TEMBWE, Mwape died at Nchanga South Mine Hospital in Chingola after a short illness.

FAZ President KEITH MWEEMBA described Mwape’s death as a huge loss to the Zambian football family and the nation, saying the association extends its deepest condolences to his family during this difficult time.

Mr. Mweemba said Mwape made an immense contribution to Zambian football, particularly during his tenure as Copper Queens coach, where he guided the team to unprecedented success, including qualification for back-to-back Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, a bronze medal at the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, and Zambia’s first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup appearance in Australia and New Zealand in 2023.

He said although it is a day of great loss, Mwape leaves behind a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire generations of players and coaches.

Mr. Mweemba added that FAZ is in contact with the family in Chingola and will announce funeral arrangements in due course.

Meanwhile, Mwape’s son, Chikonde, said his father suffered a suspected stroke on Tuesday last week and was later admitted to hospital, where he eventually passed away.

Mwape was appointed Copper Queens head coach in 2018 and guided the team to qualification for three Women’s Africa Cup of Nations tournaments in 2018, 2022 and 2024, which was played in 2025.

He also served as coach of Zambia’s Under-17 Men’s National Team in 2015.
