Malawi President Lazarous Chakwera has said his country stands with Ukraine as the European nation continues to suffer Russian aggression.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has given Malawi food aid to assist the southern African country badly hit by climate change.
This was revealed today when Ukraine’s foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba met Malawi’s Dr Chakwera at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.
The Malawi leader said Ukraine has shown attributes of a true friend for coming to the rescue of Malawians providing food aid saying the gesture will go a long way in assisting those suffering from hunger due to the effects of El-nino and other disasters.
“We will continue to pray for peace in Ukraine. If there is anyone in Africa standing with you, we are,” Chakwera said.
And Kuleba said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had instructed that Malawi be assisted with maize as part of that country’s “Grain From Ukraine” program.
The two also discussed the potential for mutually beneficial cooperation in agriculture, pharmacy, digitalization, and other fields.
Kuleba further appreciated Malawi’s firm and consistent stance on Russian aggression against Ukraine, as well as its support for the Peace Summit communique issued at the end of the high level meeting in Switzerland in June.
“Ukraine is not only grateful; we also want to be helpful. We are aware of the severe impact of climate change on Malawi’s food security,” Kuleba said.
