An unidentified person has allegedly abandoned two babies, believed to be twins, at a police officer’s home in Chingola.

Copperbelt Province Police Commanding Officer, Peacewell Mweemba, told journalists in a statement that the babies were discovered fast asleep around 20:00 hours in the backyard of the officer’s home.

Mr Mweemba explained that Helen Masakamika, a police officer based at Nchanga Police Station in Nchanga Police Camp, had left home to go to the market at around 19:00 hours.

He said when she returned at about 20:00 hours, she found two babies, abandoned and fast asleep, lying near her front door in the backyard.

“Upon inspecting the babies, they appeared healthy and intact, so she called her neighbors to help identify them. However, no one was able to recognise or identify the babies,” he said.

Mr Mweemba added that the babies were taken to Nchanga Police Station after consulting with the officer in charge, where the matter was formally reported.

He said the babies were then taken to Nchanga North General Hospital, where they have been admitted and are receiving care and treatment in Ward 7.

“Inquiries are underway to establish the identity of the person, or the mother, who abandoned the babies,” Mr Mweemba said.
