Traders at Lusaka’s Luburma market have expressed concern over the deplorable state of council toilets, which are said to generate an estimated K80,000 per month.
The toilets, despite being a significant source of revenue, have been in a state of disrepair, with broken roofs and a lack of basic amenities like toilet paper.
This was brought to light yesterday when kamwala ward area councillor Mainda Simataa visited the market.
He expressed concern too at the state of the toilets stating that, “If our public toilets look like this, then no club or restaurant must be shutdown, citing lack of hygiene.”
He emphasized the need for the council to hold itself to the same high standards of hygiene that it expects from its citizens, rather than rushing to impose fines and closures on businesses that fail to meet the stipulated standards.
