GOVERNMENT has assured citizens that the ongoing constitutional amendment process is aimed at refining the supreme law to enhance governance, not to manipulate or undermine democratic principles.
Chief Government spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa has described as unsubstantiated claims by some politicians that the New Dawn administration wants to amend the Constitution to get rid of the 50 percent plus one clause and revisit the presidential term from f ive to seven years.
Mr Mweetwa, who is Minister of Information and Media, said assertions by Patriotic Front (PF) member Emmanuel Mwamba are baseless as the intention of Government is to refine the Constitution to better the governance of Zambia.
He cited some of the areas that need to be addressed in the Constitution like delimitation of constituencies, abolishing of unnecessary by-elections and Members of Parliament (MPs) participating in decisions of local authorities as they represent people on two major fronts.
