Residents of Zesco Kalundu area in Chilanga District woke up to a rude shock after discovering the decomposed body of an unidentified woman floating in Double Impact Dam, a former open pit mine.

The body was discovered in the early hours of Sunday, April 19, 2026, emitting a strong odor and showing signs of advanced decomposition, suggesting it had been in the water for several days.

Residents told Sun FM TV News that the dam has claimed about seven lives over the past years, making it a major safety concern for the community.

Area Chairperson Claud Musune has appealed for urgent government intervention, describing the dam as a death trap that continues to endanger residents.

He added that barely a month ago, a 7-year-old boy drowned in the same dam, highlighting the urgent need for measures to prevent further loss of life.

It remains unclear under what circumstances the woman died and how she ended up in the dam.
