The Millers Association of Zambia has called for urgent intervention against suspected manipulation of weighing scales by some maize buyers in rural areas.

Association President Andrew Chintala says some farmers may be losing money because traders are allegedly using un-calibrated and inaccurate scales when buying maize.

Speaking on ZNBC Sunday Interview, Mr Chintala appealed to the Zambia Metrology Agency to intensify inspections in maize buying areas, especially in districts currently experiencing high trading activity.

Mr Chintala revealed that in some cases traders are reportedly balancing scales using stones, raising concerns about whether farmers are receiving correct payment for their produce.

He warned that the situation could lead to exploitation of small-scale farmers at a time when maize buying has intensified following projections of another bumper harvest.

And Mr Chintala said government agencies must ensure fairness and transparency in maize trading as thousands of farmers begin selling their crop across the country.
