A 27-year-old police officer, Pythias Mvula of Chazanga Police Post, has been sentenced to five years’ imprisonment with hard labour after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the death of a suspect.

The court heard that the victim, Boniface Daka, died after being severely beaten on the buttocks while in police custody following his arrest over a reported breaking into a building with intent to steal.

A postmortem confirmed that he died from blunt force trauma caused by prolonged assault.

In mitigation before the Lusaka High Court, Mvula apologised to the deceased’s family, expressing deep remorse and saying the incident had weighed heavily on him since his arrest.
