The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) in Central Province has intercepted a public service bus along the Great North Road in Kabwe, leading to the arrest of five individuals involved in a major drug trafficking operation.

Acting on intelligence reports, DEC officers launched a controlled delivery operation and set up a checkpoint near Kasanda Police Station, where they stopped the bus. The vehicle had entered Zambia from South Africa through the Chirundu Border Post and was heading to the Copperbelt Province. Upon searching the bus, officers discovered 3.1 kilograms of compressed high-grade cannabis, 143 bottles of Benylin with codeine, and 11 suspected narcotic tablets hidden inside the fuel tank compartment.

The five suspects arrested in connection with the contraband include Cacious Kunda Ngoma, 41, who was also found with the narcotic tablets, along with drivers David Sabinda, 61, and Moses Chisakama Hamashila, 40, and conductors Kelvin Chola, 42, and Miles Silwimba, 33.

The DEC has impounded the bus, and all five men are currently in custody awaiting their court appearance. Following the operation, the Commission issued a strong warning to transporters and individuals involved in the drug trade, emphasizing its commitment to dismantling trafficking networks and urging the public to continue reporting suspicious activities.
