A 24-year-old man has been arrested in Chipata after allegedly attempting to use a counterfeit K500 banknote to purchase fuel at an Engen Filling Station.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba said the incident occurred around 10:00 hours on Thursday and was later reported to Chipata Central Police Station at 11:00 hours.

The suspect, identified as Josphat Banda of Gash Compound in Chipata District, allegedly bought two litres of petrol worth K60 using a counterfeit K500 note bearing serial number AA1908072.

According to police, fuel attendant Blackson Tembo, 47, became suspicious after noticing the unusual texture of the banknote and referred it to his supervisor for verification.

The supervisor reportedly examined the note and confirmed it was counterfeit, leading to the suspect’s apprehension and subsequent handover to police.

Police have since recovered the suspected fake banknote and arrested the suspect. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.Mr Mweemba said more details would be released as investigations progress.
