The Senior Resident Magistrate Court in Lilongwe has sentenced 46-year-old Mussa Masano to 21 years in prison following his conviction for the illegal possession of body parts belonging to a person with albinism.

During the sentencing on Thursday, June 11, 2026, Senior Resident Magistrate Bracious Kondowe noted that the convict had concealed the human remains in the roof of his house, despite being fully aware that his actions constituted a serious criminal offense.

The court proceedings revealed that Masano had been promised a payment of K50 million , approximately K511,500 Zambian Kwacha
upon the successful sale of the body parts. Masano’s arrest was connected to the disappearance and murder of Laston Chipiliro, a person with albinism who was reported missing in the district on March 9, 2026.

Following the ruling, Godfrey Mavundo, an individual with albinism, expressed that while the conviction is a welcome development, the sentence is insufficient given the severity and danger of the crime. Mavundo advocated for a life imprisonment sentence, arguing that such a penalty would more appropriately reflect the gravity of the offense.
