Three armed robbers have stolen 10 million Malawian Kwacha equivalent to 40,000 Kwacha in Hillsview area of Chipata District after they impersonated police officers who were carrying out investigations.
The robbers who were wearing disposable masks tied two garden boys before breaking into the house.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba said the incident occurred around 11:30 hours yesterday when the owners of the house were not at home.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba said the intruders introduced themselves as Police Officers and one of them produced what appeared like a police identity card.
Mr Mweemba said the robbers asked for the whereabouts of the owner of the house whom they claimed was wanted in connection with some investigations.
He said upon being told that the owner of the house was not around, one of the robbers produced a pistol and ordered the gardeners to lay down before getting one of the workers to lead them to the bedroom.
Mr Mweemba said the intruders broke the master bedroom window and forced it open.
He said during the ordeal, a visitor who went to the house on a social visit entered the premises but was threatened not to shout by the robbers who later tied him.
Mr Mweemba said the intruders threatened to shoot him if he shouted for help.
He said one of the workers managed to escape and ran out of the premises to call for help and later called the police.
Mr Mweemba said police found that the intruders had already left the crime scene.
He said after a thorough search it was discovered that 10 million Malawian Kwacha was missing from the house.
Mr Mweemba said police have since launched investigations into the matter.
