The Nigerian security landscape has been plunged into mourning following the confirmed death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who passed away while in the captivity of bandits. The former Director of Defence Information had been abducted on May 30, 2026, alongside his wife, Amina Abubakar, while traveling to attend a wedding in Katsina State.
Despite sustained and coordinated efforts by the Katsina State government and security agencies to secure their release, the rescue mission ultimately proved unsuccessful. Officials reported that the General, who suffered from pre-existing health conditions including diabetes and hypertension, died due to complications arising from these illnesses while being held by his abductors. Prior to the confirmation of his death, the kidnappers had released footage of the couple, demanding the release of three detained associates and the return of confiscated livestock as conditions for their freedom.
The Defence Headquarters (DHQ), which had previously withheld public comment on the abduction to ensure the safety of the mission, has expressed its profound sorrow at the news. In a firm statement, the military high command declared that the tragedy has only served to strengthen their resolve, vowing to intensify offensive operations against terrorist and criminal networks across the country to restore peace and security.
