Five people sustained injuries following a road traffic accident along the Umodzi Highway near the Collectors Shop in Chipata.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba stated that the incident occurred around 00:10 hours on Wednesday, September 23, 2026. A 26-year-old driver, Darius Banda, allegedly lost control of a Toyota Mark X bearing registration number ADE 9423 due to excessive speed while travelling from west to east.
The speeding vehicle struck a motorcycle travelling ahead before veering off the road to smash into three mobile money booths and collide with a stationary Mercedes-Benz truck.
The casualties included:
• Darius Banda: The driver of the Toyota Mark X, who sustained general body pains.
• Numeral Mwanza (22): A passenger in the car who also sustained injuries.
• An unidentified adult female passenger: Suffered multiple head injuries and was found unconscious.
• Gift Mbewe (54): The 54-year-old rider of the unregistered Sanya motorcycle, who sustained general body pains.
• Lameck Mwale (32): The pillion passenger on the motorcycle, who suffered a deep cut on his right leg.The driver of the Mercedes-Benz truck, 32-year-old Simon Zulu of Barastone, Lusaka, escaped unhurt.
The injured parties were rushed to Chipata Central Hospital, where the unidentified female passenger was admitted, and the others were placed under observation.
Both the Toyota Mark X and the motorcycle suffered extensive damage, while the truck sustained impacts to its headlamps, windscreen, left side mirror, and grille.
