Two women from Lusaka have been taken into custody in Mazabuka after being caught trying to pass off fake K100 banknotes at a local market.
Southern Province Police Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo stated that the arrest took place late Tuesday night, September 22, 2026, around 23:30 hours. The suspects have been identified as 28-year-old Joyce Phiri of Old Chawama compound and 32-year-old Matilda Phiri of Chipili compound.
According to police, a vigilant member of the Community Crime Prevention Unit intercepted the pair at Kaleya station market after they attempted to make a purchase using a counterfeit K100 note. A subsequent search of the suspects led to the recovery of 25 suspected fake K100 bills totaling K2,500.
The two women remain in police custody while authorities continue with investigations, and the seized currency has been securely impounded.
